Miguel María Echegaray collection, 1857-1862.

Correspondence, proclamations, and literary productions pertaining to the military activities of Echegaray during the War of the Reform and the French Intervention. The Archives subgroup consists of typescripts of documents. Those relating to the War of the Reform include a description of Echegaray's campaign in Veracruz in the spring of 1858, which contains information on the liberation of Jalapa and a description of celebrations in Orizaba; a report on the Orizaba campaign; and communications exchanged by Echegaray with Manuel Gutiérrez Zamora (acting governor of Veracruz), with José Arago (governor of Perote) regarding the surrender of the fortress of Perote and its forces, and with the minister of war. Typescripts concerning the French Intervention consist of diary entries made by Echegaray while traveling from Mexico City to Orizaba and from Guanajuato to Mexico City. The entries, dating from December 1861 to October 1862, contain notes on actions and occurences during the expeditions and on the resources of the areas through which he passed; they include numerous personal references to Echegaray's wife and daughters. The Manuscripts subgroup contains the manuscript, "Instrucción militar del Gral. Miguel Ma. Echegaray sobre la Guerra de Montaña" (attributed date 1857) and a cipher key; both are filed as G483. Also in the Manuscripts subgroup is the typescript, "Recopilación de ideas de los diversos ramos de la milicia para ayuda de memoria" (G487), in which are compiled ideas on military management extracted from the writings of various military authors.
